Not Just Pulley and Tension: Why Do Belts Wear Out Prematurely?

Sometimes this sort of thing happens: a new alternator belt (additional units) or a timing belt fails much earlier than anticipated. Moreover, car mechanic hyderabad sadly declares: "My belt usually gobbled up." Yes, an exact word - gobbled up. The belt usually appears as such if someone chewed it on one side.

True, it also happens differently: it looks whole, but it appears to be stretched out and slipping on the pulleys since the tensioner no longer has enough travel. In this article, let's see who is eating belts and what to do about it.

They are different!

The design elements of the drive belts and timing belts are very different. In the first case, the belts are poly-V (ribbed), and the second are toothed belts. Moreover, the belts are usually cord construction, cord fabric,  rotatory vulcanization, and others. Let's approach the issue differently and consider the three options: the belt is worn out on the side, torn, and stretched.

Side wear is generally visible in timing belts (more often) and multi-V-belts (less often). A stretched belt is usually often a poly-V-belt, and they can all break. Therefore, it is essential to focus exclusively on the nature of the damage, based on which we can consider its causes. Now let's start with the most annoying and common damage: the belt wears out catastrophically quickly on the side.

Past, crooked and out of order

According to the car wash at home Hyderabad, of course, the most evident cause for belt edge wear is when it gets into contact with something that edge should not be in contact with. Usually, it occurs because one of the pulleys through which the belt passes is misaligned. In such cases, the belt slides to the side and rubs the sidewall against the pulley edges. What to perform? Look for a crooked pulley!

Generally, the root cause of misaligned pulley lies in the bearing destruction. The pulley turns tilted, and the belt starts eating up from the sides. The belt can easily withstand a slight misalignment, but it should not cross 1 mm per 100 mm in length. Greater than that is already a crime.

There is a straightforward method to get rid of such troubles: you need to fix the pulley misalignment, return it to the same plane with the rest of the pulley and the belt. In addition, it would be quite simple, if not for one thing: it is not always clear which pulley is crooked. Simply, you can't rely on what you see since the belt travels far away from a skew of several degrees, which is entirely invisible in appearance. Therefore, you can go in two ways.
