Appearance of White Smoke in Cold Weather

The most common reason for the occurrence of blue ("oily") smoke is oil ingress into the engine cylinders. If ignored, such an occurrence can easily become the need to call car service at home. Oily smoke can have various color shades: from transparent blue to thick white-blue. It all depends on the engine operating mode, the degree of its warming up, the amount of oil entering the cylinders, lightning, and other factors.

Moreover, it is noteworthy that oil smoke, unlike steam, does not dissipate quickly in the air, and the paper test mentioned above provides greasy droplets flying out of the pipe along with the exhaust gases. It is also evident that oil smoke is followed by increased oil consumption.

So, at the flow rate of about 0.5l / 100 km, bluish smoke appears mainly because of the transient modes, and when it reaches 1.0 l / 100 km, it also seems in uniform motion modes. In the final case, during temporary conditions, the oil smoke turns out thick blue-white. True, the owners of the most modern cars need to remember the possible presence of a neutralizer that can clean the exhaust gases from oil even at enormous costs.

Oil can make its entry into the combustion chambers (cylinders) in two ways: from below, through the piston rings, from above, through the gaps between the guide bushings and valve stems. The most probable cause for the formation of blue exhaust gases is the wear of the elements of the cylinder-piston group. Wear is observed at the upper compression rings, not only on the outer covering in contact with the cylinders. However, it also appears at end planes that receive the gas pressure in the cylinder.

Moreover, the grooves of these rings in the pistons can also be worn out. Wide groove clearances form a pumping effect. Even if the oil scraper rings are still usual, oil still enters the cylinders because the upper rings constantly "pump" it from the bottom.

Usually, cylinder wear happens in the stop zone of the upper ring when the piston reaches the top dead center, and in the middle element, they often acquire an oval shape. The shape deviation of the cylinder from the circumference impairs the sealing parts of the rings. In the locks area, gaps are usually created, but their appearance in other circle places is not excluded.

According to car repair in Bangalore, there are instances when the cylinder surface is damaged with relatively better conditions of the rings and piston. Such things happen, for example, with poor oil filtration, when abrasive elements enter between the piston skirt and the cylinder, and scratches develop on the cylinder. A similar position is absolute after an extended stay when corrosion traces appear on the surface of the cylinders and rings. It will need a lot of time to smooth out these defects and the mutual running-in of the elements (if they can break in at all).
